Life Drawing/ Painting/ With instruction or Open Sessions
I have been running my Life Drawing/ Life Painting classes in Naples- since 1986. They are for people of all abilities.
You are welcome at the life drawing as a beginner or an advanced student, whether your interest in life drawing and painting is for pleasure or for professional reasons. Life drawing courses are useful whatever it is you wish to draw or paint. Life drawing and painting equips you to work effectively from any subject; it is invaluable for artists at all levels. ClassesLife drawing:
Friday 1:30-4:00In the life drawing classes I work with people using a series of exercises to teach students how to see and how to describe the structure and rhythms of the body. You will become more aware of exactly what you are looking at and how you mightinterpret it in terms of line/tone/color. I do not impose a style of working on students. It is important that your own unique form of expression is developed, encouraged by the one-to-one tuition you receive in my classes. Class size is limited to eight
The teaching will be appropriate whatever your standard or ability. You will find the atmosphere encouraging and supportive, focused to help you move your work onto another level.
Please feel free to email or phone me if you would like to discuss details further. My number is 239-434-7544 . Ted

I agree with Doug's synopsis. Digital painting is worked by the artist in the same manor as traditional medium. Digital Photography and Digital Imagery are more reliant on their tools to create the imagery, than on the artist to generate the image.

I am in agreement with Doug's opinion. If they were included then why not photographers.

"Some time ago the president of the Portrait and Figure Painters Society of S.W. Florida contacted me to learn more about digital painting and to determine if digital painters should be included in the Society. The following is a slightly revised version of the letter I sent her. This current letter is being made available to the public and members of the organization to aid them in making a decision regarding this issue. It may also be helpful in clearing up information regarding exactly what digital painting is or isn't.

.
Information Regarding Digital Painting
.
Let me first say that I am not a digital artist, however I have had a large amount of interaction with people working in the digital realm. I have talked with them about how they work and the types of training they have undergone and feel I have had enough exposure to make an argument about their inclusion or exclusion in the “Portrait and Figure Painters Society of S. W. Florida.”
.
First I feel it is necessary to define the types of members in a “Portrait and Figure Painters Society” and then make distinctions between the different areas of digital work that might be considered for inclusion. We can define the types of members by breaking down the first four words in the title of the organization—Portrait and Figure Painters.
.
The words “Portrait and Figures” define the subject. The word “Painters” in this situation, describes the action members engage in. Even though this seems self evident it shows that people who engage in the act of painting the subject of portraiture and the figure should be allowed for inclusion in a Portrait and Figure Painters Society.
.
Now we need to break down the digital realm into its different areas and decide if they meet our definition of including both the correct subject and also the correct action. The three areas I would break the digital realm into are “computer generated imagery, digital photography/digitally enhanced photography and digital painting.”
.
“Computer generated imagery” is work that is generated in the computer by using software that allows for a 3 dimensional construct that can be viewed from any angle under various lighting conditions. Certainly portraits and figures can be created in this way thus meeting the requirement of the subject but the action taken to create the portrait is more akin to sculpture than to painting and so should not be included.
.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer-generated_imagery
.
“Digital photography/digitally enhanced photography” would also be excluded for similar reasons. Again the subject may be a portrait or a figure but again the action is not that of painting and so should not be included.
.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photography#Digital_photography
“Digital painting” is what the title implies—painting with a digital media. As with the first two areas, portraits and figures can be created in this way thus meeting the requirement of the subject. Additionally, the artists who work in this medium share in the same action as painters of traditional media. Not only do they share a similar lexicon in terms of drawing and painting, they also engage in applying strokes or masses of lines and color onto a ground. In essence the bulk of the action and the knowledge to enable those actions are the same as more traditional media. Since it is only the media that differs and not the action it should be included.
.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_painting
.
These are just my thoughts on the subject but I believe I have laid out a reasonable criteria and argument for whether different types of digital portrait and figurative work and the artists who make them should or should not be included in the “Portrait and Figure Painters Society of S. W. Florida.” Please feel free to show this to others.
